Estry spelt Etreium in 1277, Our Lady d' Estrye in 1336, Estrie in 1476, Estré in 1576.
This name seems to remind the recollection of a gallo-Roman person who would have built a villa near the Roman camp which existed in Lassy's heath, at the beginning of the future parish.
By 1170, the parish belonged to Filipine de Clinchamps, girl of Clinchamps's Hugues, it belonged to a very ancient feudal family. She married Raoul de Namars and Robert Patry, and died without
children, leaving a part of her possessions with the abbey of Plessis Grimoult.
In 1249 Raoul and Philippe de Clinchamps were Lords of Estry, it does not seem that Clinchamps lived in Estry.
In 1463 Estry's fief belonged to Jean Patry, in 1518 it was up to Jehan Patry and in 1583 Marie Patry sold to Pierre de Perthou Lord of Burcy. This one should sell it same year to Jean Thoury
who possessed Vassy's sergenterie and a fief to Montchamp.
In 1581 the Lord was Charles Thoury, a son of Jean, in 1612 it was Claude Thoury, in 1640 Pierre son of Claude. This family began the construction of a manor house, which should be enlarged and
maintained in state until our days. In 1691 Robert Coustandin de Fréval became a Lord of Estry by inheritance. He married Jeanne Marie Françoise de Ste Marie d' Outrelaize and had
a girl Marie Jeanne Françoise who got married in 1770 to Félix de Saint Germain who was to officiate in the regiment of Bearn. It was the last Lord of Estry, he participated in
the assembly of the nobility in Caen in 1789.
In the church, under the patronage of Our Lady, a skeleton which should date the 16th century, under the tower, the north side a chapel dedicated to Saint Léonard with St Ortaire's
statue at feet of whom is a small canon with knees. Another chapel in the South is dedicated to St Georges or St Maurice. Following the donation of Philipine du Rosel at the end of the 12th
century, tithes were perceived by the prieuré of Plessis. In 1700, the priest was Martin Guillaume who was named by the monks. The population counted 750 inhabitants.
A gravestone in the nef in memory of Richard Lepetit died in 1664. (Description of 1850)
In 1450 Estry belonged to the sergenterie of Le Tourneur and owed 35 days of watch to the castle of Vire.
Yew dating the 3th siécle. This hollow yew 3,10 metres in diameter could contain 15 persons.
On November 20, 1754, Jacques Olivier born in Estry cook of Louis XV had a very big sum in front of the notaries of Paris to create two free schools to Estry. What was accepted by the
inhabitants on July 14, 1755. Marie Lemonnier was named a schoolteacher of the school of the girls on October 23 of the same year. She was replaced, not being rather religious on October 20,
1770 by Catherine Buccaille native of La Manche.
The school of the boys being entrusted to Antoine Larcher, priest who was replaced on April 24, 1776 by Pierre Lefrançois also cleaned out by Estry. These schools and the free canteen
for the children of poor men owed disparaitre in 1790 with the capital and the interests of the giver.

The manor house of Variniére where the cider should be very alcoholic, was haunted for a long time by a sprite, who was whimsical and rather harmful. At the time of the harvests, by
turbulent time, it was common that it stops cars loaded with sheaves at weak distance of the farm, it did not any more remain than to carry the sheaves under cover. It sometimes urged the
wickedness to put hand the sheaves on the cart so that they wet. If he was cheerful he could return big services, he opened and closed barriéres, unloaded the sheaves and compressed them
in flash of lighting there. Invisible most of the time, it lived in the room in beads, making an infernal noise night as day, making one thousand farces to the servants of the farm. When it
made visible, it looked like a small black, lively and wriggling dog.
